England v New Zealand Second Test: Headingley Day 5

England wrap up series 2-0 after beating New Zealand by 247 runs at Headingley.

England only needed one hour and thirty minutes to take the four wickets required to beat New Zealand by 247 runs. This victory meant that England won the series 2-0 which provides a good atmosphere going into the Ashes Tests in July.

England with the Test series trophy

New Zealand resumed on 154-6 chasing 468 runs to win. However, McCullum (1) didn't last long as he was caught and bowled by Broad in only the third over of the day. Southee (38) and Bracewell (18) then entertained the crowd by playing as if it were the end of a twenty twenty game as they raced to 218-7. Their luck ran out though as Swann dismissed them both in quick succession which left New Zealand 220-9 and on the brisk of defeat. A simple edge behind was all that was needed as Anderson took the final wicket of Boult (0) to bowl New Zealand out for 220 which meant England won by 247 runs.

Player of the day: Tim Southee for briefly entertaining the crowd for what was an inevitable result.

Player of the match: Graeme Swann for taking 10 wickets on a pitch that is not known for being easy for spinners to take wickets.

Player of the Series: Joe Root for consistently scoring heavily, including his maiden Test century for England, to help England put pressure on the New Zealand batsmen. Guaranteed a place in the starting line up against Australia in the Ashes.

Graeme Swann (out of picture) bowls New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor

England began the morning session with a lead of 296 runs so it was a matter of when Cook (130) would declare. It wasn't to be soon as both Cook and Trott (76) scored quickly whilst Cook completed a classy century as England made it to 142-1. As England made it to 175-1 the partnership between Cook and Trott passed the 100 mark. Trott then completed his fifty leading England to 195-1. The day's first wicket fell when Cook was caught after Williamson floated one up to leave England 206-2. Bell (6) soon followed as Southee was able to take the catch from a Williamson delivery reducing England to 214-3. Trott and Root (28) then guided England safely to lunch at 249-3.

Straight after lunch, Trott edged behind off Wagner to leave England 249-4. Wagner then took another wicket as Root was caught in the field. Bairstow (26*) and Prior (4*) put on another twenty runs before Cook decided to declare on 287-5 which meant New Zealand would need 468 runs to win.

It wasn't long before New Zealand lost their first wicket as Broad dismissed Fulton (5) leaving the visitors 21-1. Swann then took two wickets before tea, dismissing Williamson (3) lbw and the dangerous Rutherford (42) after a thick edge onto the pad was caught which left New Zealand 68-3.

Taylor (70) and Brownlie (25) looked to have found some stability as Taylor made it to 50. However, some hostile bowling from Finn eventually dismissed Brownlie after being caught out by a bouncer. Swann took two more wickets before the end of play as Guptill (3) edged into the slips whilst Taylor was bowled which left New Zealand on 154-6 at the close of play and 310 runs behind.

Player of the Day: Graeme Swann for taking four vital wickets which helped England get closer to winning the match.

England v New Zealand Second Test: Headingley Day 3

Cook puts England on top as England lead by 296 runs.

Trent Boult takes 5-57 as England all out for 354. Swann takes 4-42 as New Zealand all out for 174 and trail by 180. England 116-1 at close of play, leading New Zealand by 296 runs.

England captain Alastair Cook

The morning session began with England resuming on 337-7. However, it only took half an hour for New Zealand to rattle out England for 354 as Boult took the wickets of Finn (6) and Anderson (0) whilst Tim Southee dismissed Prior for 39. The New Zealand openers made a comfortable start to their innings as they strolled to a fifty partnership. It was Steven Finn who took the first wicket as he caught and bowled Fulton (28) and then dismissed Rutherford (27) just before the lunch break, leaving New Zealand 62-2.

Taylor didn't last long after lunch as Finn bowled him for just 6. Swann, who had never previously taken a wicket at Headingley for England, came into the attack and took a quick brace of three wickets as two beauties saw Brownlie (2) and Guptill (1) bowled out. Then came a fortunate moment as Swann appealed for a catch only to see Williamson (13) given out by the third umpire lbw leaving New Zealand on 82-6. Another three wickets soon fell as Broad successfully reviewed a decision to dismiss Southee (17) as well as see McCullum edge the ball into the keeper's hands for 20. Swann took the wicket of Bracewell for 1 which left the visitors 122-9. To much of the delight of the crowd, Wagner (27) and Boult (24*) went for all out attack, hitting multiple sixes and added a further 52 runs before Anderson bowled Wagner to leave New Zealand 174 all out and 180 runs behind.

Cook decided not to enforce the follow-on and England increased their lead in the evening as they raced away to 50-0 after 10 overs. Some fine batting from captain Cook saw him quickly to 50. Unfortunately, Compton could not make a valuable contribution as he was dismissed by Williamson, leaving England 72-1. Cook (88*) and Trott (11*) saw England safely to the close of play 116-1 and a lead of 296 going into day 4.

Player of the Day: Alistair Cook for hitting 88* and leading England by example.

BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth Club: Day 4

Manassero wins PGA Championship at Wentworth

Matteo Manassero claims title after a birdie on the fourth play-off hole is enough to defeat a steely Simon Khan.

Manassero, Khan and Warren all finished on -10 at the end of their final rounds to top the leaderboard. This meant that they would go back to the 18th hole to begin a three-way play-off. Warren began the play-off with a wild drive into the trees before playing his third shot into the water putting him out of contention. Khan and Manassero both managed to keep their cool as they matched each other's scores right up until the fourth play-off hole. This time, Manassero opted to take driver off the tee in order go for the green in two whereas Khan used his three wood which forced the Englishman into going for the green from further back. Khan was  left to rue going for the green as his second shot found the water which meant Manaserro's birdie was enough to win the tournament.

After leading by two shots after four holes, Lee Westwood's driving began to falter which put all hopes of winning to bed after a one over round of 73. . Hook after hook left the Englishmen amongst the trees during the back nine which led to continuous bogeys. A rather disappointing end to the week for Westwood who has had trouble throughout his career closing out tournaments from winning positions.

2013 Monaco Grand Prix: Race

Rosberg holds nerve to win the Monaco Grand Prix

After an incident packed race, Nico Rosberg was able to fend off Sebastien Vettel and Mark Webber to claim his first victory at the Monaco Prix.

Here's what happened with a lap guide to all the major incidents throughout the race:

Start, lap 1: Clean getaway for both Mercedes to hold off a charging Vettel into the first corner and no changes at the front of the grid. Maldonado and Van der Garde both lose their front wings after contact.

Lap 9: Piq has an engine failure which forces him to pull over whilst the engine catches fire.
Lap 24: Maldonado collides again but this time into a Marussia.
Lap 26: First overtake of the race as Di Resta passes Massa on the first corner.
Lap 27: Raikkonen loses a place to Webber after first round of pit stops.
Lap 28: Di Resta makes another overtake stick after passing Gutierrez.
Lap 30: Massa locks up on braking which leads to a hefty crash into the wall.
Lap 31: Safety car deployed as stewards clear the wreckage from Massa's car.
Lap 32: Rosberg maintains the lead after his first pit stop but Vettel and Webber both move ahead of Hamilton who drops to fourth after poorly planned pit stop.
Lap 38: Safety car goes in and Rosberg makes a clean getaway as no changes in position occur.
Lap 40: Hamilton nearly pulls off an incredible pass on Webber who expertly keeps his car in front.
Lap 42: Button makes contact with Alonso on the Hairpin which allows Perez to pass Button at the chicane.
Lap 46: Maldonado crashes into the wall and Bianchi loses his front wing. Road blocked so red flag halts the race as stewards clear the track. No changes in position after race restarts behind the safety car but Alonso ordered to give place to Perez after cutting the chicane.
Lap 52: Sutil overtakes Button on the hairpin.
Lap 57: Sutil then overtakes Alonso on the hairpin.
Lap 60: Bianchi, similarly to Massa, locks up and crashes into the wall at the same part of the track.

Champions League Final 2013: Wembley

Bayern Munich defeat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the Champions League

Goals from Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben were enough to beat a battling Borussia Dortmund side 2-1. After previous years of misery in Champions League finals, most notably last year losing to Chelsea on penalties, Bayern Munich have finally won the prestigious Champions League trophy for another year.

European champions: Philipp Lahm lifts the Champions League trophy for Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund started the game stronger Lewandowski, Blaszkowski, Reus and Bender all came close to scoring the opening goal but an imperious Neuer kept the game at 0-0. Bayern Munich eventually hit back after 30 minutes with Mandzukic and Robben both going close for the German champions but it was not enough to break the deadlock and the match ended 0-0 at Half-Time.

Bayern came out in the second half on the front foot as mounting possession paid off after Robben broke through the Dortmund defence in the 60th minute and calmly squared the ball across to Mandzukic who slotted the ball home from close range to put Bayern 1-0 up. The lead only lasted seven minutes as Dante fouled Reus with a high foot inside the box which gave the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Lewandowski handed the duty over to Gundogan who expertly sent Neuer the wrong way and place the ball into the opposite corner, levelling the score 1-1. Both teams came close to netting a winner as Lewandowski had a majestic goal ruled out for handling the ball whilst Subotic was able to clear the ball off the line after Muller looked to have scored. However, it was Bayern Munich who managed to score the winner as mounting pressure saw Robben split the Dortmund centre backs and slot the ball past a despairing Weidenfeller to secure a memorable 2-1 victory over their German counterparts. In the end it was a quality match but Bayern Munich are deserving winners this year.

BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth Club: Day 3

Spaniard Canizares shoots 68 to lead by 1 shot after third round at Wentworth

A round of 68 was enough to leave Canizares (-9) one shot ahead of Lee Westwood (-8) going into the final round at Wentworth after a sunny day encouraged players to attack the golf course.

Genworth Stats Pack - Round 3 Review

Canizares birdied the last two holes on his way to a round of 68 which means he will partner Lee Westwood in the final pairing for tomorrow's play. Westwood looked in superb form as he was on top of both his long and short game to shoot 67. It started well with an eagle on the 5th and a further four birdies whilst a bogey on 16 was the only blip on the Englishman's  scorecard. This was a promising round of golf for Westwood as he looks to add more trophies to his bare cabinet, especially with two major championships just around the corner.

Sergio Garcia (-5) is in contention after a round of 68 left the Spaniard four shots behind alongside the Molinari brothers who are both at -5. Pablo Larazabal enjoyed a bogey free round to shoot 67 leaving him with an outside chance to lift the title. Ernie Els (-3) was unable to build from a decent second round performance as the South African only managed go around in a level par 72. There could be a strong challenge tomorrow from an English quartet that includes Mark Foster, Eddie Pepperell, Richard Bland and Lee Slattery who all ended their third rounds on -5, leaving them four shots off the lead. Henceforth, plenty of players are in contention to win tomorrow which makes for an exciting climax to the tournament.

England v New Zealand Second Test: Headingley Day 2

Late New Zealand fightback limits England to 337-7 - Root maiden century

Joe Root (104) made his first century for England after an up and down day for the hosts. Trent Boult (3-48) took three quick wickets with the second new ball of the day within the last hour of play to keep New Zealand in the hunt.

Yorkshiremen Joe Root (left) and Jonny Bairstow celebrate for England at Headingley

England won the toss and elected to bat first but Nick Compton (1) was quickly dismissed at the end of the third over by Tim Southee after a clear edge was caught in the slips, leaving England 11-1. It then looked comfortable for England as Trott (28) and Cook (34) kept ticking the runs over throughout the morning session. However, both were gone in the space of two balls five minutes before play closed for lunch as Trott nicked a forward drive whist Cook was caught out after a thick edge to leave England 67-3 at lunch.

Joe Root (104) and Ian Bell (30) made a good start to their innings as play resumed after lunch. Yet, Bell was eventually given out lbw by the umpire to which a successful review saw the decision overturned. After good progress, Bell nicked a small edge behind leaving England 146-4. To the utter delight of the crowd, Root made it to his fifty and England finished on 178-4 at Tea.

In an eventful evening session, Bairstow (64) quickly made it to his fifty which in turn saw a vital 100 run partnership between the two Yorkshireman. Then came the joyous moment the crowd waited all day for as Root made his first century for England after an edge ran to the boundary for four. New Zealand took the new ball as soon as it was offered with an hour's play left until the close. Root's magical day came to an end from the first delivery of the new ball as Trent Boult's pace was enough to see Root nick a slight edge behind. Boult then took a further two quick wickets in a spell of three overs which saw both Bairstow and Broad (0) depart, leaving England 286-7 with an hour left to play. Prior (38*) and Swann (21*) were able to put on a fast 50 run partnership to help guide England home without any further damage to rescue a dangerous situation which left England on 337-7 at the close of play.

Player of the day: Joe Root (104)
This could only go to one player today as much to the delight of the home crowd, Root showed patience, quality and composure to score his first century for England.

2013 Monaco Grand Prix: Qualifying

Nico Rosberg takes pole position for Monaco Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg set the fastest time in the final qualifying session, with a time of 1.13.876, to take pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton (left), Nico Rosberg, and Sebastian Vettel

It was a wet start to Q1 as everybody was out on track early to post a time. However, Felipe Massa was unable to take part in qualifying due to his team not being able to repair the Ferrari in time after a crash in free practice 3. It wasn't long until the first casualty as Bianchi (Marussia) was left in the wall due to a technical failure. Pastor Maldonado (Williams) set the quickest time in Q1 with a time of 1.23.452. The first major shock came in the first qualifying session as Paul Di Resta (Force India) was knocked out as poor tyre choices left the Scot in 17th place on the grid. Others that failed to make it through to Q2 were Chilton (Marussia), Gutierrez (Sauber) and Piq (Caterham).

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) then showed some form as the German was fastest in Q2, setting a time of 1.15.988. Surprisingly, after a strong first session, Maldonado was knocked out in the second along with Van Der Garde (Caterham), Botas (Williams), Grosjean (Lotus), Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) and Hulkenberg (Sauber).

It was a brilliant battle for pole but Rosberg (Mercedes) trumped team-mate Hamilton (Mercedes) to give Mercedes the front row ahead of a Red Bull second row.

Grid:

1. Rosberg (Mercedes) 2. Hamilton (Mercedes)
3Vettel (Red Bull) 4. Webber (Red Bull)
5. Raikkonen (Lotus) 6. Alonso (Ferrari)
7. Perez (Mclaren) 8. Sutil (Force India)
9. Button (Mclaren) 10. Vergne (Toro Rosso)

BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth Club: Day 2

Francesco Molinari (-6) takes a one shot lead at the halfway stage of the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth. Players struggled through rain, gusty winds and the freezing cold, as well as 18 holes, during a tough second round at the Wentworth club in Surrey.

Francesco Molinari (Getty Images)

A superb performance from Italian F. Molinari (-6) carded seven birdies on his way to a round of 68 which even started off with a bogey on the first. F. Molinari will hold a one shot advantage from a group of four players, including Englishman Mark Foster (-5), going into the third round. An impressive run of four straight birdies on the final four holes from Eddie Pepperell (-4) saw the young rookie shoot 66.

Ernie Els (-3) and Lee Westwood (-3) both managed to combat the horrific weather conditions to maintain a strong challenge going into Saturday's third round with Els going round in 68 whilst Westwood shot 71. It seemed Sergio Garcia (-1) arguably faced the biggest challenge as he continues to battle 'TigerGate'. However, the Spaniard held his nerve despite the putter stalling further progress, managing to go round in 71.

With the cut set to be +2, there were some major casualties who were unable to battle the conditions well enough to be able to come back for the weekend. Both Rory McIlroy (+5) and Graeme McDowell (+5) were left to rue poor performances after two rounds at the Wentworth club. A succession of bogeys meant that McDowell would not make the cut whilst McIlroy's driving demons came back to haunt him as hook after hook left the Northern Irishman consistently off the fairways throughout his round. Paul Casey (+4) saw his good work in the first round diminish as a front nine that included five bogeys and one double bogey crushed any chance of making the cut whilst Ian Poulter (+8) could not find any form, posting a second round of 76. Further bad news for Luke Donald (+6), who struggled with a finger injury and illness, could not recover from a poor first round to finish his defence of the title with a level par second round score of 72.

England v New Zealand Second Test: Headingley Day 1

First day's play abandoned after persistent rain at Headingley.

The start of the second Test match between England and New Zealand failed to get under way as continuous rain poured down throughout the day before officials abandoned play around 16:00 BST.

Headingley under cover

Fortunately, the weather forecast predicts clear weather for the weekend so the match should begin at 11:00 BST on Saturday morning. This will be a disappointing start to the second Test as players such as Finn, Bairstow and Compton are under close examination with places still to be decided for the upcoming Ashes series.

New Zealand were forced into making two changes as injuries to Watling and Martin mean that Bracewell and Guptill come into the side to replace them.

Thursday 23 May 2013

BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth Club: Day 1

James Kingston cards 66 to take clubhouse lead after first round.

A tough opening round at the BMW PGA Championships as the weather proved to be challenging throughout the day whilst the threat of thunder even halted play for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes in the early evening. However, it was South African James Kingston (-6) who carded a superb round of 66, including 7 birdies and 1 bogey, to take a one shot lead into the second round over Mikko Ilonen (-5).

Genworth Stats Pack - Day 1 Review

It was a good start to the tournament for some of the victorious European Ryder Cup 2012 winning team members as Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer both finished on -2 after their opening rounds. Paul Casey (70) will be pleased to come back from an injury plagued season to post a score of -2.

After a controversial week continues for Sergio Garcia (E), who has been in a spat with Tiger Woods, an eagle at the last hole to score 70 will boost his confidence going into the second round. Ernie Els (E) and Justin Rose (E) will both feel slightly disappointed coming off the 18th hole as Els finished with a bogey whilst Rose with a double bogey.

There were some poor starts from Rory McIlroy (+2) and Graeme McDowell (+2) as both struggled to combat the tough conditions. McDowell went along nicely with a single birdie and bogey at 10 and 11 respectively but an unwelcome double bogey at 18 meant the Northern Irishman posted a round of 74. McIlroy looked to be in a commanding position as 4 birdies and a bogey left him on -3 going onto the 13th tee. Sadly, a run of 5 bogeys on the last six holes means that McIlroy will be 7 shots behind the leader going into round 2.

It was a sorry start for hotly favoured Luke Donald (+6) and his compatriot Ian Poulter (+4). An eagle and a birdie was not enough to save Poulter's round as seven bogeys left the Englishman down the leaderboard. Similarly, Donald could not recover from a poor start which left him going into the back nine +5. From there it only got worse as a further bogey summed up Donald's disappointing day.

Expect another hard day tomorrow in the second round as similar weather conditions are likely to continue making it tough to score low.

Weekend Preview May 25th 2013

It may be tough coming to the realisation that the Football season has ended in England until it begins in August but worry not as there is plenty of high quality sporting events to divulge in this weekend.

Thursday: Wentworth Golf championship (4 days)
Friday: Second Test Match of England v New Zealand (5 days)
Saturday: Champions League Final and Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying
Sunday: French Open (14 days) and Monaco Grand Prix

BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, Wentworth Club

This tournament is always a good watch as it is one of the most iconic golf courses on the European Tour and made even more spectacular through the participation of the whole winning European Ryder Cup team of 2012.

My Tip to win: Luke Donald
Donald has experience of winning this tournament. Plus, it strongly matches the way Luke likes to play as it is not the longest course on the tour so straight drives, good iron play and deadly pitching will put you in contention to win on Sunday.

England v New Zealand, Second Test Match: Headingley

After a 170 run victory at Lord's, England will be looking to put in a strong performance to win the series   in preparation for the hugely anticipated Ashes series this summer. With a fantastic bowling display from Broad and Anderson in the First Test, the England batsmen will look to score heavily and spend some time at the crease to cement their Ashes place in the squad.

My Tip to win: England
The England bowling attack are in high spirits and will look to keep the New Zealand to a minimum whilst the batsmen will be keen to score heavily with in-form Joe Root. Apart from the lively bowlers of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, it seems New Zealand will not have enough to stop a strong England side.

Champions League Final: Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund (Wembley)

Ironically, 70 years later Germany will invade London although this time for footballing reasons but don't mention the war! In all seriousness though, this should be a cracking game of football with both teams deservedly in the Final. Bayern thumped Barcelona for seven in their semi-final whilst Dortmund held on in Madrid to win 4-3 on aggregate.

My Tip to win: Bayern Munich
Two strong teams but it could the German champions who prevail with their experience and attacking power to lift the 2013 Champions League trophy.

Monaco Grand Prix: Qualifying

The most spectacular race on the Formula 1 calender is this weekend and begins with Qualifying. It is every driver's dream to win on the streets of Monaco and with Mercedes on top in previous Qualifying race weekends this season, I would be surprised if a Mercedes failed to get on the front row.

My Tip to be on Pole: Lewis Hamilton
Expect tough competition from Alonso and Vettel but with Mercedes dominance in Qualifying I expect Lewis Hamilton to pip team-mate Rosberg to pole position.

Monaco Grand Prix: Race

As it is one of the toughest races to overtake someone, pole position will be vital. Therefore, whoever is on the front row at the beginning of the race will strongly fancy their chances to win. Concentration is key on these streets but one blip will likely end in a crash. Thus, the Monaco Grand Prix is a showcase for what Formula 1 is all about - Wealth and Fame.

My Tip to win: Nico Rosberg

If Rosberg can get on the front row for the start of the race his steely determination and ability to drive consistently on tough tracks should see him take a valuable Monaco Grand Prix victory.

2013 French Open - Roland Garros

The clay court season comes to a close at the second grand slam tournament of the year. There are always high profile shocks here as top players struggle to adapt to playing and sliding on the clay. Expect classic matches and top quality tennis as the tournament begins on Sunday.

My Tip to win: Mens - Rafael Nadal, Womans - Serena Williams

With the withdrawal of Andy Murray, there will be a chance for someone outside of the top 3 players to make it to the semi's. Expect to see the usual suspects of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic advance to the semi-finals but with Nadal's sheer supremacy at this slam and current form on clay then I expect him to win it yet again.
On the woman's side, this is a tournament that is famously wide open for any woman tennis player to win as top seeds struggle to adapt to clay court conditions. There are always massive shocks throughout but if Serena Williams can maintain her composure then her recent dominance of the woman's game should continue.

Barclays Premier League Final Day of the Season Report

West Brom 5 V 5 Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson's 1500th and final game in charge of United finished in spectacular style in a 10 goal thriller at the Hawthorns. It seemed as though United would cruise to victory as they raced to a 3-0 lead inside the opening half an hour through goals from Kagawa (6), Olsson (O.G. 9) and Buttner (30). However, Morrison  (40) gave the Albion hope just before half time cutting the deficit to 3-1. Lukaku came on at the start of the second half to have an immediate impact as a cool finish on 53 mins made it 3-2. United soon increased their advantage through an impressive Van Persie (53) strike. Hernandez then looked to have sealed the match with his strike on 63 mins. An inspired last 10 minute performance from West Brom amazingly saw them draw level to spoil the United celebrations as Mulumbu (81) and Lukaku (81,86), who completed his hat-trick, both scored.

Tottenham 1 V 0 Sunderland

Bale's wonder goal in the 90th minute left in vein as Spurs are only given Europa League spot. It seemed for the majority of the game that it just wasn't going to be Tottenham's day as Sunderland saw off wave after wave of Spurs pressure. Tottenham felt aggrieved after two very strong penalty claims were waved away with Bale controversially being booked for diving. Late on, Vaughan saw red after being shown two yellow cards whilst Lloris pulled off some important saves to keep the game at 0-0. Spurs were eventually rewarded as Bale scored yet another world class goal, curling home from 25 yards to give them the win they needed to have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, but it was not to be.

Newcastle 0 v 1 Arsenal

Arsenal win to qualify for the Champions League. Both teams had chances in the first half but Cazorla and Cisse were only able to blaze over the bar as it finished 0-0 at Half Time. Early in the second half a silly foul from Cabaye gave Arsenal a free kick from which they secured that vital goal. The two Arsenal centre backs were able to combine from a Walcott cross as Koscielny (52) struck home. A lacklustre Newcastle were unable to get back in the game as Arsenal held out for a 1-0 win that sent them back into the Champions League.

Man City 2 v 3 Norwich

Norwich play well to secure away win  over a lacklustre city team. Pilkington (26) took advantage of some poor city defending to put the visitors ahead before Rodwell (29) quickly equalised to end the half 1-1. Rodwell (53) put city in front early in the second half only to see Holt (54) instantly bring the scores level at 2-2. Norwich then took the lead after a direct run from the halfway line saw Howson (65) coolly finish the move giving the Canaries an impressive away win 3-2.

Chelsea 2 v 1 Everton

Chelsea came through a closely contested match which saw the last games of both managers at their clubs. It was Chelsea who opened the scoring as Mata (7) converted a parried save. Everton fought back as Naismith (14) capitalised on a poor David Luiz touch to neatly chip past Cech levelling the match at 1-1. Both sides created chances throughout the second half as Gibson saw an effort bounce off the post but it was Torres (76) who smashed the ball home to win Chelsea's last game of the season.

 Liverpool 1 - 0 QPR

Liverpool send Carragher off with a win. In a game controlled by the home side, Coutinho had seemingly put the ball over the line but no official was convinced it had. Hence, goal line technology will be a welcome enhancement to the game next season. It didn't take too much longer to break the deadlock as Coutinho's (23) low driven shot was enough to beat Green, putting Liverpool 1-0 up. Carragher almost capped his final appearance with a wonder strike from 30 yards only to see it fly off the post. It was a decent performance from Liverpool who will look to build upon their progress next season.

West Ham 4 v 2 Reading

Nolan hat-trick inspires West Ham to thrilling victory. Carroll, who was at the heart of the majority of Hammers goals, played in Nolan (23) to open the scoring. Vaz Te (34) was at hand to slot home before the break to double the hosts lead going into half time 2-0. Reading came out fighting in the second half and levelled the match at 2-2 from two quick goals from McCleary (53) and Le Fondre (55). However, it was not enough to stop West Ham regaining the lead as Nolan (79, 80) completed his hat-trick to give the Hammers the victory.

Wigan 2 v 2 Aston Villa

Spoils shared at the DW stadium. Darren Bent was back in the team and made an instant impact after slotting home within the first 5 minutes. Emerson Boyce (21) then equalised for Wigan with a powering header. Just before half time Baker (OG, 45) was left red faced as the ball was deflected off him into the net as Villa struggled to clear the ball. Boyce nearly increased Wigan's lead after half time but saw his effort rebound off the crossbar. A spectacular volley from Vlaar (61) brought the scores level at 2-2. McCarthur came close to winning the match for Wigan late on but saw his strike come back off the crossbar.

Swansea 0 v 3 Fulham

Fulham pull off a classic smash and grab to claim away win. In a game dominated by Swansea, Fulham managed to hold on and score 3 goals against the run of play. Kacaniklic (22) put Fulham ahead mid way through the first half whilst two second half goals from Berbatov (77) and Emanuelsson (90) gave the visitors victory.

Southampton 1 v 1 Stoke

In a game overshadowed by Michael Owen's final appearance before retirement, the spoils were shared. Crouch (47) opened the scoring with a trademark header at the beginning of the second half. However, a Rickie Lambert (57) equaliser saw the game finish 1-1.

England v New Zealand First Test: Lord's Day 4

England take 1-0 lead over New Zealand

Broad stars as England claim a heavy defeat over New Zealand to take a 1-0 lead in the Test Match series against New Zealand. It was a good start to the summer for England as bowlers Anderson and Broad limit New Zealand to just 68 in their second innings chasing 239 runs to win by 170.

James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Joe Root

The crowd were thoroughly entertained during an action packed morning session which saw England resume on 180-6. Tim Southee looked to continue where he left off last night as he took three further wickets, falling within the opening hour. Wickets began to fall on just the fifth ball of the day as Southee tempted Finn (6) into a forward drive which was edged into the slips. England then reached the 200 run mark but soon saw Southee strike again as Bell (6) fell suspect to an edge into the slips. Broad (26*) started to take the initiative by playing aggressively which gave England some valuable runs amongst the seeming tail end collapse. However, Southee, who impressively took 6-50, saw yet another edge caught in the slips as Swann (1) was dismissed after failing to make a stand. The England innings eventually came to a close at 213 within the opening hours play at Lord's as Anderson only managed to last five balls, coming suspect to Williamson's dangerous off-spin who ended with figures of 2-20.

New Zealand were left to chase 239, needing the highest batting total of the match, with the game excitingly in the balance. England then ran rampage over the New Zealand opening order as a tremendous bowling display from Broad, who took a match-winning and career best of 7-44, rapidly dismissed Fulton (1), Rutherford (9) and Taylor (0) leaving the visitors 9-3. New Zealand continued to have no answer to the world class bowling from Anderson and Broad as Broad took Williamson's wicket for just 6 runs whilst Anderson claimed Brownlie for 5, leaving them 25-5 after only 11 overs. Then came the crucial wicket on the last ball before lunch as Broad claimed his fifth wicket of the day, dismissing the dangerous McCullum for  8.

After lunch, Anderson and Broad continued to punish New Zealand as Broad saw Southee (7) hook a short ball into the safe hands of Joe Root whilst soon after Watling (13) nicked an edge into the slips stalling them to 54-8. With the game seemingly over, Broad showed his quality by smashing the middle stump of Martin (1) out of the ground in emphatic style. Eventually, New Zealand were all out for 67 as Anderson took advantage of some rather calamitous running between Wagner (17) and Boult (0*) to simply run out a deflated Wagner.

Man of the Match: Stuart Broad

Broad simply blew away the New Zealand batting attack in the second innings and contributed an important 26 runs through a second innings final order collapse helping England to a great start to the Summer.

England v New Zealand First Test: Lord's Day 3

New Zealand fight back after strong England Start

England finished on 180 for 6 with a lead of 205 runs at the end of day 3 but a batting collapse just before the close of play gives New Zealand hope going into day 4 and the result of the first Test Match in the balance.

England started off well as Stuart Broad took a key wicket, dismissing Brendon McCullum for only 2 on the second ball of his opening spell. This set the tone for the morning as James Anderson, who took 5 wickets for 47 runs, soon after saw Kane Williamson nick an edge into the hands of Matt Prior for 60. From then on, the English pace attack whittled New Zealand out for 207 after a brace of 4 wickets from Steven Finn which meant that England would go into their second innings with a lead of 25.

Joe Root drives through the off side

The afternoon session began with England openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton settling in to 36 - 0. However, Cook was fortunate to escape a New Zealand review with the third umpire unable to gather any conclusive evidence to overturn the original not out decision. Eventually, Cook's luck ran out as Dean Brownlie took a quite magnificent catch, dismissing Cook for only 21. This seemed to lift the New Zealanders spirits whilst an interruption in Compton's concentration left him being bowled out by Neil Wagner shortly after for 15, leaving England at 36 - 2. Jonathan Trott and Joe Root then showed composure, patience and class to put England back into control, ending at 91 - 2 at Tea.

During the evening session, a possible match winning partnership between Trott and Root continued. Both playing some delightful shots to make their fifties. It was not all plain sailing though as quite a comical lack of communication between the pair almost saw them run-out on more than one occasion. Despite this, England looked certain to be in a commanding position at the close of play. Unfortunately, Tim Southee came back into the attack late in the day to start a gritty New Zealand fightback which began when Root was bowled out for 71 after dragging an inside edge onto his own stumps leaving England 159 - 3. A rather calamitous batting display then saw Southee claim a further two quick wickets, taking Bairstow (5) and Prior (0). Williamson then bowled Trott (56) after the spinner found some sharp spin from the rough. This left England reeling after a poor performance in the last half an hour of play saw them squander to 180 - 6 at stumps whilst their strong position in the game slipped away. England's hopes of winning the match now rely on the tail order to get a competitive lead from which the bowlers will have to defend.

Player of the day: Joe Root for scoring the highest total (71) of any batsmen so far in this Test Match. This provided England with much needed runs as they look to build an unattainable lead. His composure and determination at the crease proves to be an example to the rest of the English batsmen in steely batting.

England v New Zealand First Test: Lord's Day 2

Honours even after England fight back on day 2.

After a slow day at the crease on day 1, England provided little more to their total on day 2. More of the same as Root and Bairstow both played some thrilling shots and made it to 40 and 41 respectively but failed to convert their innings into a more meaningful score. What was most disappointing was the final order collapse of the England batsmen. Root managed to clip an edge down the leg side and from then on the New Zealand bowlers dominated proceedings. Prior fell to Southee lbw first ball whilst Broad only managed to face 3 balls before falling to a plumb lbw. From then on England were skittled out for 232.

Praise must go to the high quality young New Zealand pace attack as Southee and Wagner showed that discipline, swing and a consistent line will reap rewards.

Ross Taylor plays through the leg side

New Zealand found the slow pitch a struggle to begin with as they lost their opening batsmen cheaply to a rampant Jimmy Anderson, who profited from the ball swinging, as he took his 300th Test Match wicket becoming the fourth highest England Test Match wicket taker of all time. A quickfire 66 from 72 balls from Ross Taylor gave New Zealand a much needed boost to their score but fell to that man Anderson lbw. Steve Finn chipped in with a successful lbw review which left New Zealand 153 for 4 at the close of play.

Honours even then after two days at Lord's as both teams struggle to score on the slow pitch whilst the pace bowlers profit from the ball swinging. Michael Vaughan believes that England have managed to post a 'competitive total'. However, the game seems to be hanging in the balance as the match could depend on how well the New Zealand middle order do on day 3 with Williamson on 44* and McCullum entering the frame.

The second day was fairly even with both teams taking crucial wickets. However, if England can take early wickets on day three then they will gain the advantage going into the second innings.

Player of the day: Jimmy Anderson for taking his 300th Test wicket and the quick removal of the New Zealand opening order. Figures of 3 wickets for 32 runs and 7 maiden overs reflects what an important player Anderson is the England bowling attack.

England v New Zealand First Test: Lord's Day 1

England grind their way slowly to 160 for 4 at the end of the first day's play at Lord's. A patient New Zealand bowling attack kept the England batsmen at bay for the majority of the day as they capitalised on some rather disappointing batting.

Joe Root drives through the off side in his unbeaten 25

With a run rate of 2.00 and 30 maidens bowled, it showed that it was a tough day to score on a slow pitch. However, it seemed a case of getting in and getting out as Cook, Trott and Bell each made it into the thirties but failed to post a more meaningful score due to lapses of concentration.

More promising is the presence of the two in form Yorkshireman, Root and Bairstow, currently at the crease who have the potential to nail down a regular spot in the England team. Let's hope they can increase the run rate and post higher scores than that of the opening order.

Consequently, the first day has to go the Kiwis.

Player of the day: Trent Boult with figures of 2 wickets for 29 runs and 7 maiden overs bowled.
