Rafael Nadal becomes US Open champion
Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets to win the US Open. The first set was a sign of things to come with long rallies and powerful baseline play but it was Nadal who stepped up a gear to win the opening set 6-2. Djokovic came back strongly in the second set after some inspiring tennis and broke the Nadal serve to level the match at one set apiece. The third set changed the match completely and proved to be a pivotal turning point. Djokovic continued his dominance at the start of the third set and broke the Nadal serve again to lead by a single break. However, the momentum shifted into Nadal's favour as Djokovic produced unforced error after unforced error as Nadal levelled at 4-4. From then on Nadal never looked back, firstly taking the third set to lead by two sets to one before racing away with the fourth set to claim an astonishing four set victory over Djokovic.
My Opinion:
A brilliant tennis match to watch as Nadal proved he was back to his best. Djokovic threw it away in my opinion as he just produced too many unforced errors, especially in the critical third set. Nadal got off to a really fast start and caught Djokovic cold but the Serb showed some spirit and fight to rightly level the match. It looked as though Djokovic had the momentum in the third set and looked certain to win the set after going a break up. However, it was partly due to Nadal's brilliance and Djokovic messing up that Nadal was let back into the third set. Djokovic seemed stunned and lost the crucial third set and consequently Nadal ran away with it in the fourth to seal an amazing victory. A fabulous tournament and many great memories to take away from the last major of the year.
Men's Final Result:
(2) Nadal beat (1) Djokovic 6-2,3-6,6-4,6-1.
Men's Performance of the Tournament: Stan Wawrinka for an incredible performance, making it all the way to the Semi-Finals and defeating defending champion Andy Murray along the way.
Men's Match of the Tournament: Novak Djokovic defeating Stan Wawrinka in their Semi-Final five set thriller.
Shock of the Tournament: Tommy Robredo beating Roger Federer in straight sets in the Fourth Round.
Serena Williams wins the US Open
Serena Williams won the US Open after defeating Victoria Azarenka in three sets. It was a very closely fought final for two sets before Williams ran away with the third set. The first set was very competitive with both women keeping up with each others hard hitting from the back of the court but it was Williams who held onto a break of serve to win the first set 7-5. Azarenka fought back valiantly in the second set and levelled the match at one set apiece after taking it 7-5. However, Williams really upped her performance to another level which Azarenka could not cope with. Consequently, Williams ran away to be crowned US Open champion by winning the third set 6-1.
My Opinion:
That was the Final we all wanted to see and it did not disappoint. The match could have gone either way but Serena just seemed to be able to go up another gear in the final set which proved to be the difference. The first two sets were very close and the match deservedly went to a third set. It was a valiant effort from Azarenka but Serena proved why she is world number one and rightly deserved to win after that performance.
Women's Final Result:
(1) Williams beat (2) Azarenka 7-5,5-7,6-1.
Men's Doubles Final Result:
(4) Paes/Stepanek beat (2) Peya/Soares 6-1,6-3.
Boys' Singles Final Result:
(4) Coric beat Kokkinakis 3-6,6-3,6-1.
Girls' Singles Final Result:
(2) Konjuh beat Black 3-6,6-4,7-6.
Women's Performance of the Tournament: Unseeded Flavia Pennetta made it all the way to the Semi-Finals after beating many seeds including fourth seed Sara Errani.
Women's Match of the Tournament: Serena Williams versus Victoria Azarenka was the Final everyone wanted to see and it didn't disappoint.
Shock of the Tournament: Third seed Agnieska Radwanska losing in the fourth round to 24th seed Makarova.
Djokovic to meet Nadal in US Open Final
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will meet in the Final of the US Open after both claiming Semi-Final victories. In one of the greatest matches in the US Open ever, Novak Djokovic came back from two sets to one to beat an inspired Stanislas Wawrinka performance. The ninth seed came out guns blazing and shocked Djokovic to take the first set 6-2. In a very competitive second set, Djokovic levelled proceedings after taking a closely fought tie-break. However, it was Wawrinka who broke the Djokovic serve to win the third set. The reply was strong from Djokovic, who had to play the tennis of his life to compete with Wawrinka, taking the fourth and incredible fifth set to book his place in the Final. The number one seed will face the second seed Rafael Nadal in the Final after the Spaniard defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets. Nadal proved to be too strong for Gasquet who fought valiantly until losing the second set tie-break which shifted the momentum fully into Nadal's corner. From then on it was the Nadal show and he eventually took the third set 6-2.
My Opinion:
What an amazing match to watch between two top players in the form of their lives. It looked as though Wawrinka had a real chance of a major upset against Djokovic after taking the first set so strongly and even more so when he took the third set to lead 2-1. You have to admire Djokovic for the way he fought and came back to win that match. Absolutely incredible from the Serbian master. The only worry for me is that it took so much out of him physically that he may fall short for fitness in the Final against Nadal in what could be a similar situation to the Wimbledon Final where he was too tired to compete to his full potential. Nadal was in superb form and eased past Gasquet in what could have been a tricky contest. I expect Nadal to win after he came through his match in easier circumstances but it should still be an absolute cracker.
Men's Semi-Final Results:
(1) Djokovic beat (9) Wawrinka 2-6,7-6,3-6,6-3,6-4.
(2) Nadal beat (8) Gasquet 6-4,7-6,6-2.
Boys' Doubles Final Result:
Majchrzak/Redlicki beat Halys/Silva 6-3,6-4.
Girls' Doubles Final Result:
(1) Krejcikova/Siniakova beat (3) Bencic/Tormo 6-3,6-4.
Men's Performance of the Day: Novak Djokovic had to play his best tennis to beat Stan Wawrinka in five sets.
Williams to meet Azarenka in US Open Final
Serena Williams will meet Victoria Azarenka in the US Open Final after both coming through their Semi-Finals victorious. Williams made it through to the Final after playing Na Li off the court throughout their match. Na Li struggled to cope with the heavy hitting of Williams and consequently suffered a first set bagel. The fifth seed managed to find her game in the second set but it was not enough as Williams came out on top with a straight sets victory. In the other Semi-Final, it was business as usual for Victoria Azarenka who came through in straight sets over Flavia Pennetta. The encounter proved to be an even contest in the first set but Azarenka broke serve and held on to win the first set 6-4. From then on the momentum was fully behind the second seed which meant that Pennetta's brilliant run in the tournament came to a disappointing end.
My Opinion:
Not surprised that Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka are both in the Final. The seedings were spot on for this draw and it should be the match of the tournament. Na Li has been playing so well up to the Semi-Finals and to lose so convincingly puts into perspective how well Serena Williams is playing. To bagel Na Li is a tough feat but not for Serena. Hopefully Azarenka can give her match in the Final. Azarenka herself eased into the Final after beating surprise Semi-Finalist Flavia Pennetta. For me the result of this match was never in question as the continuous high tempo from Azarenka seemed to much to handle for the Italian. I would expect Serena to win the Final but I wouldn't be surprised to see a closely fought three set epic.
Women's Semi-Final Results:
(1) Williams beat (5) Na Li 6-0,6-3.
(2) Azarenka beat Pennetta 6-4,6-2.
Mixed Doubles Final Result:
(7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi beat Spears/Gonzalez 7-6,6-3.
Women's Performance of the Day: Serena Williams was in devastating form and thrashed Na Li.
Murray out of US Open after Quarter-Final defeat to Wawrinka
Andy Murray was blown off the court by a sensational Wawrinka performance as he crashed out of the US Open. The ninth seed produced winner after winner on his way to an impressive straight sets victory over Murray. It was a competitive first set but Wawrinka broke the Murray serve and held out to take the opening set 6-4. Murray just couldn't find his game and looked troubled as Wawrinka compounded his misery to take the next two sets with ease. Meanwhile, the other Quarter-Final that took place saw Novak Djokovic defeat Mikhail Youzhny in four sets. It was business as usual for Djokovic who comfortably took the first two sets. However, Youzhny managed to inspire a set of his own as he broke the Djokovic serve and held out to take the third set 6-3. The game did not last for much longer as Djokovic hit back to win the match with a fourth set bagel and booked his place in the Semi-Finals.
My Opinion:
Really gutted to see Murray go out in that fashion. He didnt' turn up but Wawrinka definitely turned up and played some of the best tennis I have ever seen him play. Extraordinary backhands and forehands from the ninth seed who thoroughly deserved to beat Murray. Everyone will be scared of the way he is playing and it will be a thrilling Semi-Final. Not surprised to see Djokovic in the Semi's but a little amazed to see he dropped a set against Youzhny. Clearly he didn't take well to losing a set as he hit straight back with a bagel. A very strong lineup for the Men's Semi's and cannot wait to witness what happens.
Men's Quarter-Final Selected Results:
(1) Djokovic beat (21) Youzhny 6-3,6-2,3-6,6-0.
(9) Wawrinka beat (3) Murray 6-4,6-3,6-2.
Junior Girls' Third Round Selected Result:
(11) Hiti beat Boulter 6-1,6-0.
Men's Performance of the Day: Stan Warinka was insane against Murray.
Men's Match of the Day: Stan Wawrinka playing some inspirational tennis to beat Murray.
Shock of the Day: Youzhny took a set off Djokovic.
Nadal and Azarenka both through to US Open Semi-Finals
Rafael Nadal was in destructive form as he blitzed past a despairing Tommy Robredo in straight sets. The match was never in doubt as Robredo suffered a first set bagel before eventually winning a game in the second set. It was a display of Nadal's deadly ground stroke weapons as Robredo just couldn't cope with the artillery. Meanwhile, in the other Quarter-Final Richard Gasquet recovered to win in a five set thriller to advance past David Ferrer. It was the Frenchman who looked set to take victory after taking a two set lead but Ferrer fought back brilliantly to level the match at two sets apiece. However, Gasquet managed to gather his composure and take the fifth set 6-3.
Victoria Azarenka had little trouble in her straight sets victory over Daniela Hantuchova. The second seed looked to be in control throughout and deservedly receives a Semi-Final spot. Flavia Pennetta shocked another big seed to make the Semi's after defeating 10th seed Roberta Vinci in straight sets. It was close first set with only one break of serve making the difference but the second set was dominated by Pennetta who took it 6-1.
My Opinion:
Nadal is in really impressive form and to beat Robredo so easily is a scary reality. Robredo would have expected a lot more from that match after taking out Federer in the previous round but Nadal is a different beast and surely the favourite alongside Djokovic to win the US Open. What a match that was between Gasquet and Ferrer. A Classic five set thriller with momentum swinging both ways. I thought Gasquet was going to win in three sets but Ferrer fought back gallantly to level proceedings. The fifth set can sometimes be a lottery and Gasquet deserved to come out on top this time. Azarenka was never troubled against Hantuchova as she possessed the more power from the back of the court. However, I was surprised by how well Pennetta played against Vinci as she powered past her and into the Semi's. Now there is only one more set of Quarters to be played out before we enter the Semi-Finals.
Men's Quarter-Final Selected Results:
(2) Nadal beat (19) Robredo 6-0,6-2,6-2.
(8) Gasquet beat (4) Ferrer 6-3,6-1,4-6,2-6,6-3.

Murray through to US Open Quarter-Finals
Andy Murray made it through to the US Open Quarter-Finals after defeating Denis Istomin in four sets. It was a closely fought opening set and Istomin managed to take it through a tie-break. Murray fought back in the next set and broke twice on his way to taking the second set 6-1 before grinding out the next two sets to claim victory. Novak Djokovic was in a hurry to progress into the Quarters as hey raced to victory over Marc Granollers, conceding only three games during their three sets after the Spaniard suffered two bagels. Stan Wawrinka continued his fine form with an impressive four set win over Tomas Berdych. The momentum shifted after with each set but Wawrinka won the third set tie-break and stormed to victory in the fourth set. In the match of the day, Youzhny overcame a stubborn Hewitt in a five set thriller. Hewitt took a 2-1 set lead before Youzhny hit back and won the next two to pave his way into the Quarters.
In the last of the Women's fourth round matches, Victoria Azarenka battled to a three set win over Ana Ivanovic. It was Ivanovic who took the first set but Azarenka broke serve in each of the next two sets to put herself in the Quarters. Serena Williams crushed Carla Suarez-Navarro as she made it into the Semi-Finals without the loss of a single game. Meanwhile, Na Li was made to work hard for her Semi-Final spot as Makarova pushed her all the way to a third set which Na Li managed to win fairly comfortably.
My Opinion:
Good to see Murray battle back against Istomin who has had one of his best ever runs in a major tournament. Djokovic was hugely impressive in his win over Granollers in what was an absolute thrashing that included two bagels. Wawrinka is in the form of his life and after losing the first set to Berdych he stormed to victory albeit winning the third set tie-break was vital to the way the match went. Youzhny impressed me after coming back from 2-1 sets down to win in five against Hewitt who never gives up. Azarenka was put through her paces for the first time this tournament but she managed to recover from losing the first set well by winning the next two. Serena Williams literally crushed Suarez-Navarro and raced to a double bagel win. Na Li was in a tough battle against Makarova but kept her nerve in the third set to make the Semi's.

Tommy Robredo knocks Roger Federer out of US Open
Tommy Robredo shocked Roger Federer in straight sets to progress into the US Open Quarter-Finals. The Spaniard won a closely fought opening set after winning the tie-break in what turned out to be the major turning point in the match. The momentum fully shifted to Robredo who broke the Federer serve in the next two sets to claim an impressive victory. Rafael Nadal was in trouble after losing the first set to Philip Kohlschreiber but managed to turn the match around and won in four sets. Similarly, David Ferrer was made to work hard for his victory over Janko Tipsarevic, eventually winning after four sets. The match of the day was played out between Richard Gasquet and Milos Raonic. Three sets went to tie-breaks as the serves came crashing down but it was Gasquet who came back from 2-1 sets down to win the fifth set in an absolute thriller.
With the rain playing havoc with the tournament schedule, there was only a handful of fourth round matches that were able to be completed today. Roberta Vinci came through her tie on top after beating Giorgi in straight sets whilst Flavia Pennetta continues to impress with her run to the extending to the Quarter-Finals after taking victory against Halep. Daniela Hantuchova came through a tough encounter with Alison Riske, battling to a competitive three set win.
My Opinion:
Really shocked by the way Roger Federer crashed out. It has not been a great year at all for Roger who now struggles to make Quarter-Finals. A great performance from Tommy Robredo to win so convincingly but the first set tie-break was really crucial to the way the match turned out. David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal were tested on their way into the Quarters but no surprise to see those two in the last eight. Amazing match between Gasquet and Raonic as they battled through five bruising sets. Plenty of respect to Gasquet for turning that match around and breaking the Raonic serve in the final set. Things went as expected for me in the women's results. Possibly a little surprised by the run of Pennetta but who knows how far she can go.
Men's Fourth Round Selected Results:
(2) Nadal beat (22) Kohlschreiber 6-7,6-4,6-3,6-1.
(4) Ferrer beat (18) Tipsarevic 7-6,3-6,7-5,7-6.

Shock of the Day: Roger Federer crashing out against Tommy Robredo so easily.
Andy Murray into the Fourth Round at US Open
Andy Murray paved his way into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows after a straight sets victory over Mayer. It was a closely competitive first set but Murray came out on top in the tie-break. From then on it was easy going for Murray who gained double breaks in the next two sets to take the win. Novak Djokovic was in superior form as he raced past Sousa in straight sets after only losing four games. It was a similar story for Tomas Berdych who bageled Benneteau in their first set before easing to victory. Stan Wawrinka is in fine form as he knocked out Baghdatis to make the fourth round. Two minor upsets as Youzhny defeated Haas in four sets whilst Istomin continues his great run with a five set thriller over Seppi.
Serena Williams is into the Quarter Finals after defeating her younger American opponent in Sloane Stephens in straight sets. The first set was closely fought but Williams had the extra power in her game to break the Stephens serve. In the second set Williams just ran away with, winning 6-1 to take victory. Na Li finds herself in the Quarter Finals after trouncing Jelena Jankovic 6-3,6-0. Carla Suarez-Navarro turned heads with her win over eighth seed Angelique Kerber. It was the German who took the first set but Suarez-Navarro fought back strongly as she levelled the match at one set apiece before winning the third set tie-break.
My Opinion:
Pleased to see Murray continue his run into the fourth round but I wouldn't have expected anything less. Djokovic and Berdych seem to be in great form as they wasted no time on their way into the last 16. People need to be wary of Wawrinka in the draw as he poses a great threat to anyone in that form. Surprised Haas got knocked out by Youzhny but it just might not have been his day as he lost comfortably in four sets. High praise must go to Istomin who seems to be playing the tennis of his life right now. This time coming back to win in five sets agaisnt Seppi. No surprise to see Serena into the Quarters, especially after the way she blasted past Stephens. Na Li seems to be on top of her game as beating Jankovic so convincingly is no mean feat. Suarez-Navarro is another surprise package to be in the Quarters. I expect Serena and Azarenka to be in the final but there are plenty of chances for everyone else to make a shock appearance in the women's final.
Men's Third Round Selected Results:
(1) Djokovic beat Sousa 6-0,6-2,6-2.
(3) Murray beat Mayer 7-6,6-2,6-2.
(5) Berdych beat Benneteau 6-0,6-3,6-2.

Nadal, Federer and Azarenka all progress into Fourth Round
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and David Ferrer all made it through to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. Federer eased past Mannarino in straight sets along with Nadal who knocked out Dodig. It was a tough encounter for Ferrer who dropped the third set in his victory over Kukushkin. The amazing run for Dan Evans ended after defeat to Tommy Robredo in four sets. Evans lost out in the first set tie-break and quickly lost the second set 6-1. However, The Brit fought back and took the third set but in a hard fought fourth set, Robredo broke the Evans serve and held out to win 7-5.
Victoria Azarenka was made to work for her place in the fourth round after a three set victory over a battling Cornet. The first set went to a tie-break but it was Cornet who came out on top but Azarenka soon found her destructive game to win the next two sets in convincing style. There were two big upsets as both Wozniacki and Kvitova crashed out. Giori lost the first set to Wozniacki but stunned the 6th seed to win the next two sets whilst Riske thrashed 7th seed Kvitova after only conceding three games. Halep destoyed Kirilenko on her way to the fourth round as Kirilenko only managed to put one game under her belt during the match.
My Opinion:
Gutted for Dan Evans who just ran out of steam against Tommy Robredo. It could have been different if Evans had won the first set tie-break as he lost all momentum in the second set. He managed to find his game again to take the third set but couldn't hold his nerve in the fourth, ending an incredible run. Nadal and Federer cruised to wins as expected but Ferrer had to battle hard to win his match. A couple of huge serving matches between Raonic and Lopez and Kohlschreiber and Isner. Not surprised that Raonic came out on top but a little surprised that Isner crashed out. Azarenka was put through her paces but came through whilst Ivanovic battled her way past Mchale in three sets. Three huge shocks for me as Wozniacki, Kivtova and Kirilenko all crashed out. The woman's draw is really opening up now with so many of the top seeds out.
Men's Third Round Selected Results:
(2) Nadal beat Dodig 6-4,6-3,6-4.
(4) Ferrer beat Kukushkin 6-4,6-3,4-6,6-4.

(13) Ivanovic beat Mchale 4-6,7-5,6-4.

Women's Performance of the Day: Giorgi for beating Caroline Wozniacki.
Women's Match of the Day: Victoria Azarenka winning in three sets against Alize Cornet.
Shock of the Day: Caroline Wozniacki being knocked out by unseeded Giorgi.
Hewitt rolls back the years to beat Del Potro
An incredible encounter between Lleyton Hewitt and Juan Martin Del Potro entertained the crowd for five thrilling sets before the Australian came out on top. Hewitt took the first set after holding onto a break of serve before the 8th seed hit back to take the next two sets. However, it was the fourth set tie-break which proved to be pivotal to the momentum of the match as Hewitt levelled at two sets apiece. Del Potro ran out of steam and crashed out of the US Open as Hewitt stormed to victory, winning the fifth set 6-1. Andy Murray got through a stern test after taking four sets to beat Mayer. Easier days for Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych who both booked their places in the third round.
Laura Robson was knocked out of the US Open in the third round after encountering an imperious Na Li. The third seed simply outplayed Robson who just couldn't find a way past Na Li. Serena Williams and Agnieska Radwanska both produced fine displays as they fought their way into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. Angelique Kerber strolled past Wimbledon Semi-finalist Kai Kanepi in straight sets whilst Makarova defeated Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki in two competitive sets.
My Opinion:
It was good to see Murray come through that tough encounter. Murray seemed to be in control of the match after taking the first two sets but Mayer hit back to win the third which put nerves into place. However, Murray smashed his way past Mayer to convincingly win the fourth set. Amazing performance from Hewitt to take out Del Potro in five sets. It just shows that the gritty Australian still has some determination and fight in him as that was incredible. Not surprised to see Djokovic and Berdych stroll into the third round as they were never in doubt of losing. A real shame for Robson as she bowed out in the third round. She simply came up against an in form Na Li who outplayed her. Easy enough wins for Serena and Radwanska as they pave their way deeper into the tournament. A little surprised to see Lisicki crash out but then again she is prone to either being brilliant or poor.
Men's Second Round Selected Results:
