Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer with a straight sets victory to reach the Australian Open Final. The first set saw a closely contested battle that needed to be decided with a tie break. It was the Spaniard who came out on top to take the first along with the vital momentum that it provided. Federer lost his serve in the second set and was unable to break back which meant Nadal took a 2-0 set lead going into the third. It was a similar story in the third set to the second as a single break of the Federer serve was enough to claim victory for Nadal who will play Stanislas Wawrinka in the Final.
My Opinion:
It was one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament as old foes Nadal and Federer met once again in yet another massive match. The first set was going to be very important for Federer who needed to go ahead, mainly to overcome any mental battle he has with Nadal. Plus, Nadal will always be favourite over Federer if the match goes to five sets as he possesses greater fitness levels. In the end, it was Nadal who claimed the first set after winning the tie break. You could sense this was a major blow for Federer but a massive boost for Nadal. The momentum shifted towards Nadal's corner who proved too good for Federer in the second set and took a two set lead. It was now a massive task for Federer to come back from this situation and he couldn't manage it as Nadal battled his way to a straight sets victory. A great run in the tournament from Federer who will take a lot from it and hopefully we will see another good season from his this year. Nadal will be chuffed to have made the final after his injury woes from last year and will go into the final as favourite. Wawrinka has been playing the tennis of his life on his incredible run to the final but he may be spent from his epic encounter with Djokovic in the semi's. Should be a good final but I would expect Nadal to win in either three or four sets.
