US Open: Third and Fourth Round (Day 7)

Andy Murray into the Fourth Round at US Open

Andy Murray paved his way into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows after a straight sets victory over Mayer. It was a closely competitive first set but Murray came out on top in the tie-break. From then on it was easy going for Murray who gained double breaks in the next two sets to take the win. Novak Djokovic was in superior form as he raced past Sousa in straight sets after only losing four games. It was a similar story for Tomas Berdych who bageled Benneteau in their first set before easing to victory. Stan Wawrinka is in fine form as he knocked out Baghdatis to make the fourth round. Two minor upsets as Youzhny defeated Haas in four sets whilst Istomin continues his great run with a five set thriller over Seppi.

Serena Williams is into the Quarter Finals after defeating her younger American opponent in Sloane Stephens in straight sets. The first set was closely fought but Williams had the extra power in her game to break the Stephens serve. In the second set Williams just ran away with, winning 6-1 to take victory. Na Li finds herself in the Quarter Finals after trouncing Jelena Jankovic 6-3,6-0. Carla Suarez-Navarro turned heads with her win over eighth seed Angelique Kerber. It was the German who took the first set but Suarez-Navarro fought back strongly as she levelled the match at one set apiece before winning the third set tie-break.

My Opinion:

Pleased to see Murray continue his run into the fourth round but I wouldn't have expected anything less. Djokovic and Berdych seem to be in great form as they wasted no time on their way into the last 16. People need to be wary of Wawrinka in the draw as he poses a great threat to anyone in that form. Surprised Haas got knocked out by Youzhny but it just might not have been his day as he lost comfortably in four sets. High praise must go to Istomin who seems to be playing the tennis of his life right now. This time coming back to win in five sets agaisnt Seppi. No surprise to see Serena into the Quarters, especially after the way she blasted past Stephens. Na Li seems to be on top of her game as beating Jankovic so convincingly is no mean feat. Suarez-Navarro is another surprise package to be in the Quarters. I expect Serena and Azarenka to be in the final but there are plenty of chances for everyone else to make a shock appearance in the women's final.
