US Open: Second and Third Round (Day 5)

Hewitt rolls back the years to beat Del Potro

An incredible encounter between Lleyton Hewitt and Juan Martin Del Potro entertained the crowd for five thrilling sets before the Australian came out on top. Hewitt took the first set after holding onto a break of serve before the 8th seed hit back to take the next two sets. However, it was the fourth set tie-break which proved to be pivotal to the momentum of the match as Hewitt levelled at two sets apiece. Del Potro ran out of steam and crashed out of the US Open as Hewitt stormed to victory, winning the fifth set 6-1. Andy Murray got through a stern test after taking four sets to beat Mayer. Easier days for Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych who both booked their places in the third round.

Laura Robson was knocked out of the US Open in the third round after encountering an imperious Na Li. The third seed simply outplayed Robson who just couldn't find a way past Na Li. Serena Williams and Agnieska Radwanska both produced fine displays as they fought their way into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. Angelique Kerber strolled past Wimbledon Semi-finalist Kai Kanepi in straight sets whilst Makarova defeated Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki in two competitive sets.

My Opinion:

It was good to see Murray come through that tough encounter. Murray seemed to be in control of the match after taking the first two sets but Mayer hit back to win the third which put nerves into place. However, Murray smashed his way past Mayer to convincingly win the fourth set. Amazing performance from Hewitt to take out Del Potro in five sets. It just shows that the gritty Australian still has some determination and fight in him as that was incredible. Not surprised to see Djokovic and Berdych stroll into the third round as they were never in doubt of losing. A real shame for Robson as she bowed out in the third round. She simply came up against an in form Na Li who outplayed her. Easy enough wins for Serena and Radwanska as they pave their way deeper into the tournament. A little surprised to see Lisicki crash out but then again she is prone to either being brilliant or poor.
