Ashes Series Australia v England - First Test (Day 2) Brisbane

England crumble during first innings

Australia 295 and 65-0 lead England 136 by 224 runs

England lost nine wickets for under 100 runs during the first innings catastrophe. Earlier in the day, Australia could only manage to add a further 22 runs for their final two wickets as they were bowled out for 295 with Haddin missing out by six runs for his century. England started their first innings well but things started to get very bad very quickly. Cook and Trott were dismissed before lunch but it was the afternoon session in which England suffered a terrible batting collapse. Johnson demonstrated some bowling spells that were simply too hot to handle for the English middle order and in the space of an hour, England were reduced from 82-3 to 94-8. Broad scored a vital 32 runs before edging behind as England were bowled out for a miserable 136. To pile on the misery, Rogers and Warner put Australia 224 runs ahead at the close of play as they finished on 65-0.

My Opinion:
Terribly disappointed by that first innings effort from England. Things were looking in good shape as Australia were limited to a score under 300 and Haddin missed out on a century. However, after a not so bad start, England crumbled in awful style. Carberry and Broad were the only two players to make it past 20 runs. I was particularly saddened by the attempts of Bell, Prior and Root who could only muster seven runs between them. It must be said that Johnson was bowling at his best today and was extremely tough to face but it was still a poor effort from England. Australia are fully on top of the match at this point and it will be tough for England during the next few days.
Australia will be looking to push their lead past the 400 run mark whilst England need a brilliant day of bowling tomorrow and bat a lot better in their second innings to at best claim a draw.
