ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Day 8: England v Sri Lanka (The Oval)

Sangakkara hits 134* to help Sri Lanka to victory over England

Sri Lanka 297-3 (47.1 overs) beat England 293-7 (50 overs) by seven wickets.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara was just too good for England as they claimed a much needed win in their bid to qualify from group A. England's hopes of qualification took a hit from this defeat but they can still progress if they beat New Zealand. It was a good start for England as Cook (59), Trott (76) and Root (68) all provided decent knocks to provide a dominant position at 249-4 after 45 overs. However, a middle order batting collapse saw England only score five runs for the loss of three quick wickets in a mad two over spell. A quite brilliant performance from Bopara salvaged England after scoring an unbeaten 33 runs off 13 balls to take the hosts to 293-7 after 50 overs. Disappointingly, it was not enough as the Sri Lankan batsmen dominated England's bowling attack. Dilshan (44), Jayawardene (42) and Kulasekara (58*) all scored heavily and quickly but it was Sangakkara who quite simply stole the show with his unbeaten 134* to guide Sri Lanka home in the 48th over to finish on 297-3.

My Opinion: England batted well and got off to a good start. The middle order fell apart at around the 250 run mark but some brilliance from Bopara saved the team to post a solid total. England's inability to stop runs off every ball cost them in this match. Sri Lanka batted extremely well and all credit must go to them but poor fielding and bowling from England enabled the likes of Sangakkara to score so heavily.
