Australian Open: First Round (Day 1)

Djokovic and Serena safely through, Kvitova out

Novak Djokovic came through his opening match at the Australian Open in fine style, beating Lacko in straight sets. David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Stanislas Wawrinka all came through their opening round matches unscathed with straight set victories. The highest seed to have fallen in the men's draw was Tommy Haas who retired after being 7-5,5-2 down to Garcia-Lopez. Tommy Robredo, Kevin Anderson and Jerzy Janowicz all came from behind to win their matches in five set thrillers.
Serena Williams won her first round match after defeating Australian Ashley Barty in straight sets. Fourth seed Na Li wasted no time in overcoming Konjuh for the loss of only two games. Three major seeds fell in the first round today as Kvitova, Errani and Vinci all crashed out. It was not the start to the tournament that British pair Heather Watson and Laura Robson were hoping for after they both lost. Watson lost in three sets to Hantuchova whilst Robson was outplayed by Flipkens.

My Opinion:
An interesting opening day to the tournament which provided upsets and five set thrillers. No surprises to see the top men's seeds safely through to round two but it was a shame to see Haas having to retire from his match. There were some impressive fightbacks from Robredo and Anderson to win in five sets whilst it was clear to see Janowicz feel his way back into the routine of things with a five set win. Serena and Na Li both dominated in their victories but there were some big upsets in the women's draw. Kvitova looked out of sorts and was beaten in three sets whilst the Italian pair of Errani and Vinci were both knocked out. Shouldn't be that much of a surprise as they are both clay court specialists and often struggle with the faster surfaces. It was a real shame to see both the British girls go out so early. Watson had patches where she looked in form but was beaten by Hantuchova whilst Flipkens just blew Robson off the court.
