Australian Open: First Round (Day 2)

Nadal, Murray and Azarenka all through

Rafael Nadal only needed to play one set after Bernard Tomic was forced to retire due to injury. Andy Murray strolled into the second round with a straight sets win over Soeda. There were comfortable wins for Federer and Tsonga who didn't drop a set whilst Del Potro recovered from losing the opening set tie break to win in four sets. John Isner was the highest seeded casualty in the men's draw after losing the first two sets, the American decided to retire from the match because of an injury. There were plenty of five set epics with Nishikori and Seppi overcoming Australians Matosevic and Hewitt respectively. The game of the day saw Simon overcome Brands 16-14 in the fifth set.
Victoria Azarenka won a tight opening set tie break before easing into the second round after defeating Larsson. Maria Sharapova overcame a competitive Mattek-Sands with two breaks of serve in each set. Radwanska didn't drop a game in her opening set but was pegged back to 1-1 set all with Putintseva. However, the fifth seed claimed two breaks of serve in the third set to book her place in round two. There were comfortable wins for Jankovic, Wozniacki and Halep whilst Svitolina caused the biggest upset in the women's draw to knock out Kuznetsova in straight sets.

My Opinion:
Not too many surprises today with most of the top seeds progressing into the second round. Nadal only had to endure one set before Tomic was forced to retire. Murray looked to be in good shape and overcame Soeda pretty easily. Del potro recovered well from losing the first set tie break whilst Federer and Tsonga cruised to victory. It was a shame to see Isner pull out as he could have been a dangerous opponent here. Nishikori, Simon and Seppi were all tested to the maximum and will be delighted to have come through their five set thrillers. Disappointing to see home favourite Hewitt crash out so early but he gave it a real go.
Azarenka and Sharapova were both made to work hard for theirs wins whilst Radwanska had to recover from losing the second set before prevailing. Easy wins for Jankovic, Wozniacki and Halep who all looked at ease. I was surprised to see Kuznetsova fall in the first round but Svitolina played really well.
