French Open: Day 6 - Second Round and Third Round

Federer, Nadal, Sharapova and S.Williams all progress

Rafael Nadal lost the opening set for the second time in a row after a slow start against Klizan. The hot favourite for the title then fought back to win in four sets. Maria Sharapova progressed to the third round after beating Bouchard in straight sets. Roger Federer battled past Julien Benneteau in three sets to make the fourth round whilst Serena Williams only dropped two games in her match against Cirstea. Plenty of French potential left in the draw as Tsonga, Gasquet and Simon all progress but a burnt out Monfils was unable to convert either of his four match points against Robredo who eventually won 6-2 in the fifth set.

Performance of the Day: Tommy Robredo.

This was a really tough decision as there were a range of outstanding performances on day 6 at the French Open. It began with Tipsarevic and Isner both winning their fifth set 8-6 against decent opponents in Verdasco and Harrison. Simon then came from two sets to one and a break down in the fourth to prevail against Querrey in the fifth 6-2. There were two major shocks as Troicki and Anderson both won in straight sets against Cilic and Raonic respectively. However, for sheer stamina and determination, Tommy Robredo cam back from two sets down and saved four match points to impressively defeat Gael Monfils in five set thriller.
