Rafael Nadal got the one birthday present he desired with a straight sets victory over Kei Nishikori. Nadal's heavy ground strokes proved too much for a battling Nishikori who could not trouble the Spaniard. Novak Djokovic lost the opening set to Philip Kohlschreiber but fought his way back into the match to win in four sets. Many pundits predicted a surprise shock as Francesca Schiavone took on Victoria Azarenka. However, it was only close for the opening six games before Azarenka won the next nine games in a row to clinch a spot in the quarter-finals. In the end, the biggest shock came in the interview after the match finished as Redfoo, who is Azrenka's famous boyfriend from LMFAO, declared that he is aiming to qualify for the US open. Maria Sharapova showed her quality to defeat a rising star in Sloane Stephens in two competitive sets as she continues to defend her title.

Performance of the Day: Stanislas Wawrinka for defeating Richard Gasquet and a French crowd in a five set thriller. Gasquet won the opening two sets before Wawrinka tied the match at two sets apiece. It was Gasquet who tired first though as a strong Wawrinka took advantage to grind out the final set 8-6.
