World Cup Qualifier: England v Poland

England beat Poland to qualify for the World Cup

England 2 v 0 Poland Rooney (41), Gerrard (88)

England qualify for the World Cup. The first half was largely dominated by England but they couldn't find an early goal to settle the nerves. Welbeck poked wide of the near post from a Baines cross before Lewandowski ran past the England defence only to produce a tame effort. Townsend tried his luck with a long range drive but it was duly saved whilst Sobota flashed a shot into the side netting. Nobody was able to provide a touch on Gerrard's curling free kick, flashing wide of the far post before Lewandowski dragged a shot wide of the far post. Townsend nearly put England ahead but his thunderous long range strike bounced off the crossbar. Sturridge had a close range shot saved before Welbeck managed to put the ball wide from six yards. However, Rooney put England ahead five minutes before half time after heading in a Baines cross into the far bottom corner. Sobota thought he had levelled for Poland just before the break but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Poland had two early chances spurned straight after half time as Klich had a shot blocked before blazing over from close range. Cahill had a header pushed away by the goalie whilst Rooney had a long range curling effort saved. Sturridge had a right footed shot tipped over the bar as England struggled to secure a second goal. However, with only minutes left to go, Gerrard produced a bit of class to double the home sides lead. Gerrad controlled Milner's pass on the edge of the box before going past two defenders and coolly chipping the ball past the goalie at the near post.

My Opinion:

My man of the match was Rooney who looked threatening all game up front and produced the first goal. England deserved to win the game and qualify for the World Cup but it was a very nervous game to watch. Poland had a few close chances which could have found the net on another night but England were the dominant team.

Best Goal: Gerrard
