Ashes Series: England v Australia - Fourth Test (Day 4) at Chester Le Street

Stuart Broad takes six wickets as England win the Ashes Series

England 238 and 330 beat Australia 270 and 224 by 74 runs (England win series 3-0)

A special evening session of bowling saw Stuart Broad take six wickets to bowl Australia out for 224 to give England victory by 74 runs and to win the Ashes series in style. England added 80 runs to their overnight score before being bowled out for 330 in the morning session. Ryan Harris took three wickets to take his tally for the innings to seven as Bell was dismissed for 113 and Prior gone for a golden duck of the next ball. Bresnan added 45 runs before being caught and bowled by Harris. The second innings came to an end when Anderson edged behind off Lyon for 0. The game was in the balance as England led by 298 runs which meant that Australia had to chase down 298 runs with two and a half days to go. There was an hour of delay after lunch as the rain came down but it left midway through the afternoon. Australia got off to a perfect start and looked favourites to win the match at 109-0 with Rogers and Warner going strong. However, Swann managed to dismiss Rogers for 49 just before the Tea break to leave Australia 115-1. The match will always be remembered for this session as England took nine wickets to seal an amazing victory. Swann took his second wicket as Khawaja departed for 21 before Bresnan dismissed Warner for 71. Stuart Broad then took six wickets as Australia suffered one of their worst ever batting collapses in history. It all started when Broad bowled Clarke and followed it up by bowling Smith. Haddin and Harris both fell lbw before Broad completed his five wicket haul by bowling Lyon. The game was up for Australia as they struggled on 211-9 and the game was ended by Broad who dismissed Siddle for 23 as Australia crumbled to 224 all out to give England a 74 run victory and an unassailable 3-0 series lead.

My Opinion:

Pure drama and the reason we love sport so much. It was a decent second innings effort by England to score 330 with much of the credit going to Ian Bell for scoring 113. However, the game could have gone either way with two days left to play and Australia chasing down 299 to win. It seemed as though Australia would cruise to victory after going to 109-0. Swann took two important top order wickets to reduce them to 147-2 but Australia were still in the drivers seat. Tim Bresnan chipped in with two wickets to dismiss the dangerous pair of Warner and Watson but Stuart Broad was the star of the show. Six wickets in one session was a special effort from Broad. It was a major batting collapse from the Australia but Broad simply bowled one of the best spells of his career. Brilliant stuff from the England lads who won the Ashes series in style. Still one more Test to go but Australia will be distraught after their second innings disaster.
