US Open: Second Round (Day 4)

Dan Evans through to third round of US Open

Dan Evans continued his amazing run of form with a four set victory over Bernard Tomic. It was a slow start for Evans who lost the opening set 6-1 but the Brit came back to level the match one set all. Evans won the crucial third set tie-break and managed to hold on to a break of serve to win the match in the fourth set. Rafael Nadal demolished his opponent for the concession of only three games as the second seed raced into the third round. Roger Federer made light work of his straight sets victory over Berlocq as the 7th seed progressed into the third round. John Isner delighted the American crowd after his thrilling win over the audacious Gael Mofils in four sets.

Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka both progressed into the third round after routine victories over their opponents. Serena only lost three games during her match and produced a bagel in the second set whilst Azarenka stormed past Wozniak 6-1 in the second set. The major shock of the day and the tournament so far was Flavia Pennetta defeating 4th seed Sara Errani in straight sets fairly comfortably. Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova both eased into the third round but it was Angelique Kerber who came through one of the toughest matches of the day. 8th seed Kerber had to battle hard in her three sets win over the young rising star of women's tennis Bouchard.

My Opinion:

Dan Evans is simply playing the tennis and tournament of his life right now. To beat Nishikori and Tomic in the first two rounds of a major tournament is really impressive. It is great news for the British Davis Cup team who potentially have a really strong player to partner Andy Murray. Really pleased for Evans and I hope he can go through to the fourth round. Routine wins for Nadal and Federer who were never troubled in their matches. Isner thrilled the crowd with his win over Monfils which was a great watch. Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka wasted little time in their victories today which comes as no surprise. Similarly, it was not a real surprise for me to see Errani lose to Pennetta. Errani is a clay court specialist whilst Pennetta is taller and stronger. Pennetta did play really well and deserved to go through. Really impressed with Bouchard who took Kerber all the way to three sets and I'm sure there are great things to come for her.

Acclaim: Evans applauds the crowd for their support
