US Open: First Round (Day 3)

Murray and Robson march on at Flushing Meadows

Andy Murray is safely into the second round after a straight sets victory over Michael Llodra. It was a stern test for the British number one but he managed to navigate his way to the second round. Juan Martin Del Potro was put through his paces after a tough encounter with Garcia-Lopez. The sixth seed dropped the second set to a tie-break but overcame his opponent in four sets. Stanislas looked in decent form after overcoming Radek Stepanek in straight sets. The major shock of the day came when Ram easily brushed aside 16th seed Fabio Fognini in three comfortable sets.

Laura Robson continued her fine form to make her way into the third round after a hard fought straight sets win over Garcia. Radwanska won her first set with a bagel but had to fight a lot harder in the second set before taking victory. Na Li and Sloane Stephens came through their second round matches with ease as they impose their threat on the draw. 

My Opinion:

Great wins for Andy Murray and Laura Robson today. Really pleased for them both as they look in good form with their respective straight sets victories. Del Potro and Anderson were both tested in their first round wins after they both conceded the second set to their opponents. An amazing performance from Ram to thrash Fognini in straight sets. A really bad off day for Fognini but Ram took full advantage. The top women seeds all cruised into the third round as Radwanska, Na Li and Stephens wrapped up straight set victories. Hopefully Murray and Robson can continue their fine form to march on through the their draws.

Men's Performance of the Day: Ram shone in thrashing Fabio Fognini.

Women's Performance of the Day: Radwanska showed both class and grit in her victory over Torro-Flor.

Shock of the Day: 16th seed Fabio Fognini only won five games in his defeat to Ram in the first round.
