Daniel Evans caused a major upset in the first round after beating Kei Nishikori in straight sets. It was a brilliant performance from the young Brit who will attract plenty of attention after such a high scalp. Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer both got their US Open campaigns off to a winning start after both came through in straight set victories. Richard Gasquet strolled into the second round after overcoming Russell in three sets.
Both Serena and her sister Venus Williams were victorious in their first round matches. Serena only lost one game on her way to thrashing Francesca Schiavone whilst Venus impressively defeated Wimbledon semi-finalist Flipkens in straight sets. It was business as usual for all the high seeds in the women's draw as Radwanska, Na Li and Angelique Kerber all came through their first round matches in straight sets. Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki defeated Dushevina in two sets whilst Laura Robson overcame Dominguez-Lino, winning the second set to love.
My Opinion:
A great day for British tennis as both Laura Robson, and more surprisingly Dan Evans, won their first round matches. Dan Evans played some inspired tennis to beat Kei Nishikori and even more so to do it in straight sets. Really bright signs for Dan Evans. Laura Robson battled through a tough first set but showed her power and class to blast past Domingez-Lino. No other major shocks as the top seeds all safely progressed into the second round. Nadal and Ferrer will be both be pleased to win in easy fashion whilst it was good to see both Serena and Venus make it to the second round.
