UEFA Super Cup: Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

Bayern Munich win 5-4 on penalties to win Super Cup

Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea Torres (8), Ribery (47), Hazard (93), Martinez (120). Bayern Munich win 5-4 on penalties.

Bayern Munich stole the Super Cup after a late equaliser in extra time enabled the German champions to win 5-4 on penalties. It was a great start for Chelsea who opened the scoring with a brilliant team goal inside the first ten minutes. Hazard received the ball on the half way line and played Schurrle down the line as Chelsea broke quickly squaring for Torres who brilliantly smashed home past Neuer. The game settled down after Chelsea took the lead and Bayern ended the first half strongly with plenty of pressure.

Only two minutes into the second half and Bayern equalised. Franck Ribery hit a thunderous shot from long range and it was too much to handle for Petr Cech who couldn't keep the ball out. Chelsea nearly took the lead again but Neuer made two impressive saves. A pivotal moment in the match came when Ramires was sent off for a second yellow card to reduce Chelsea to ten men. However, Chelsea managed to hang on and took the game into extra time.

Eden Hazard gave Chelsea the perfect start to extra time after scoring within the first three minutes as Chelsea took the lead for the second time. However, it was continuous Bayern pressure throughout extra time but it looked as though Chelsea would hang on for victory. In an amazing end to extra time, Javi Martinez scored from close range with the last kick of the game to equalise for Bayern and took the match to penalties.

Both sides were showing their capability from the penalty spot as nine consecutive penalties were scored. However, as Bayern led 5-4 it was left down to Lukaku to take the game into sudden death. Unfortunately for Chelsea his lacklustre penalty was saved by Neuer and Bayern Munich won the UEFA Super Cup.

My Opinion:

Chelsea got off to a great start and I was really impressed by the Torres goal. This could be the sort of goal that brings the old Torres back. Bayern came back strongly and it wasn't surprising that they got back into the game early in the second half. Ribery pulled out an absolute rocket to equalise. Ramires was rightly sent off for two deserved yellow cards and Chelsea did well to take the game into extra time. When Chelsea went 2-1 up early in extra time I thought they had done enough to win but with ten men there was always a chance Bayern would score again. It was so gutting to see Chelsea lose their lead with the last kick of the game as you had to fancy Bayern to win on penalties. I was expecting to be watching a lot of penalties after everyone scored. However, Lukaku just casually walked up to the ball and hit a very weak penalty which was rightly saved by Neuer. A great game to watch and just a shame Chelsea couldn't hold onto a lead.

Goal of the Day: Fernando Torres with a brilliant finish to end a deadly fast break.

Man of the Match: Manuel Neuer for numerous saves during the match and saving Lukaku's penalty.
