Soccer Saturday Game Week 2

13/14: Fulham 1-3 Arsenal - Lukas Podolski

Fulham 1 v 3 Arsenal Giroud 14, Podolski 41 and 68, Bent 77

Podolski double sinks Fulham. Arsenal got off to a fast start as Walcott had an effort saved early on. Giroud opened the scoring for the Gunners after controlling a Jenkinson shot and chipping the ball cleverly over the goalie. Fulham hit back as Sciezsny was forced into making a double save. Gibbs dragged wide before Podolski doubled Arsenal's lead before half time. The German calmly slotted home from close range after Walcott's shot was parried. Fulham came out into the second half strongly as Tarrabt forced a good save from Sciezsny. However, Podolski killed the game off after scoring his second goal of the game to give Arsenal a 3-0 lead. It was a low drilled strike from the edge of the area after a lay off from Cazorla into the far bottom corner.  Fulham managed to grab a late consolation goal as Bent tapped in from close range after Berbatov's shot was parried across goal.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Podolski for scoring twice. A very solid performance from Arsenal who needed that victory after a poor start to the season last week. Darren Bent came on and looked a threat for Fulham who will have better days themselves.

Stoke City 2 v 1 Crystal Palace Chamakh 31, Adam 58, Shawcross 62

Shawcross gives Stoke victory. The game got off to a slow start with the only chance going to Crouch, who headed over, in the opening twenty minutes. It was Palace who opened the scoring on the half an hour mark through Chamakh after controlling a long ball and firing in. Stoke nearly immediately equalised but Crouch was denied after his header crashed back off the crossbar. Moxey saw his effort skim past the post before Campagne floated his free kick over as Palace went into the break 1-0 up. Two quick goals from Stoke completely changed the game around as Adam and Shawcross gave the hosts the lead. Adam scored after sidefooting into the corner from close range before Shawcross took advantage of some poor Palace defending to slot home from close range. Puncheon had a shot saved before Nzonzi hit the post after his shot was deflected.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Charlie Adam for turning the game around for Stoke. It was a really lucky escape for Stoke who would probably have lost that game if it wasn't for the poor Palace defending.

Aston Villa 0 v 1 Liverpool Sturridge 21

Sturridge gives Liverpool victory after amazing solo goal. Daniel Sturridge provided Liverpool with a spectacular individual goal to put Liverpool in front on twenty minutes. Aston Villa looked dangerous before half time as Benteke had a shot saved before Weiman blazed over the bar. It was Villa who looked the more threatening in the second half as Agbonlahor's effort went just wide whilst Tonev had his long shot saved. Mignolet pulled off a great save towards the end of the match to deny Benteke the equaliser as Liverpool held on for victory.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Daniel Sturridge for his amazing solo goal. A pretty boring and non eventful game but Sturridge proved to be the difference whilst Mignolet managed to keep a clean sheet.

Hull City 1 v 0 Norwich Brady 22(p), Sagbo sent off 27

Brady penalty enough to give Hull victory. Norwich started the game in a lively fashion as Fer headed just wide before Redmond had an effort saved. Hull then came into the match as Livermore blazed over. The major moment of the match came when Turner fouled Sagbo in the box and the referee pointed at the penalty spot. Brady coolly converted the penalty to give Hull the lead. Redmond blazed over before Sagbo was sent off for a headbutt to limit Hull to 10 men. Redmond blazed over before the game came to the end of the eventful first half. Howson had an effort saved before blazing over as Norwich mounted more and more pressure on Hull. Wolfswinkel had his header well saved as Hull incredibly held on for victory.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to McGregor for keeping a clean sheet. A great win for Hull who held on to a 1-0 lead for the best part of 70 minutes. Norwich should really have scored but for an inspired performance from Hull goalkeeper McGregor.

Southampton 1 v 1 Sunderland Giaccherini 3, Fonte 88

Fonte scores late equaliser for Saints. Sunderland got off to a perfect start as the smallest player on the pitch Giaccherini headed in from a corner in the third minute. Southampton thought they had equalised three minutes later but Rodriguez had his goal disallowed for offside. Lambert had a header saved as Sunderland held on to take the lead going into half time. Straight after the break Ji had a tame effort saved before Rodriguez had his header saved. Southampton kept pushing for an equaliser but it didn't come quickly as Lambert had another shot saved. It was left late but Fonte headed home from a late free kick as Southampton equalised.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Jose Fonte for his late equaliser. It was a much better performance from Sunderland who looked to create chances and were unfortunate not to take all three points. For Southampton it was a lucky escape as Fonte scored late on to give them a point.

Everton 0 v 0 West Brom

West Brom hold out for a draw at Everton. It was a first half dominated by Everton but they couldn't open the scoring despite their efforts. Piennar had a header saved in the opening five minutes as Everton got off to a fast start. West Brom managed to get themselves into the game and Morrison volleyed over as they created their first real chance. Mirallas had a good effort tipped over the bar just before half time. Everton were unfortunate not to take the lead early in the second half as both Barkley and Fellaini had their efforts thwarted. Morrison had his shot saved before Fellaini hit the post. Coleman had a shot saved before his whipped cross hit the crossbar in the dying minutes.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Fellaini who was a real threat for Everton and created multiple chances. Everton were the much better team and were desperately unlucky not to score and take victory. West Brom will be pleased to come away with a point after that performance.

Newcastle 0 v 0 West Ham

Newcastle and West Ham play out a very boring draw. The only real chances of note that came in the first half fell to Reid who firstly saw his back pass cleared off the line before shooting just over the bar at the correct end. Nolan headed over as West Ham started the second half much the same as in the first. However, Newcastle managed to create their first real opening in the 90th minute as Ameobi hit the post before Maiga had his goal disallowed for offside in a frantic end to the game.

My Opinion:

The man of the match goes to Jarvis who had a really good game on the left wing. A really boring match was played out here and you could tell it had 0-0 written all over it. The game did come alive in the 90th minute but a draw was very much deserved.

Best Goal of the Day: Daniel Sturridge for his majestic solo effort.

Upset of the Day: Hull City beating Norwich 1-0 with 10 men.

Performance of the Day: The Hull City defence were amazing to keep a clean sheet.
