It was business as usual in the mens draw as the top seeds booked their places in the second round. Novak Djokovic eased past Berankis, Tomas Berdych strolled to victory over Lorenzi and Roger Federer disposed of Zemlja. Their were convincing wins for Milos Raonic, Tommy Haas and John Isner as they were never really tested. The big surprise came when Denis Istomin shocked 15th seed Nicolas Almagro in four sets to send the Spaniard out.
Victoria Azarenka and Sara Errani both wasted no time in their opening matches after dispatching their opponents in double bagels. It was not the start Heather Watson wanted as the young Brit crashed out after a three sets loss to Halep. Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic overcame their matches in straight sets wins whilst Petra Kvitova needed three sets before defeating Doi. There were two major casualties in the womens draw as 17th seed Cibulkova lost to Svitolina and 11th seed Sam Stosur crashed out after losing to Duval.
My Opinion:
Djokovic, Berdych and Federer all cruised to their first round wins as they marched into the second round which will please the big guns. Isner was in imperious form, winning the first set to love on his way to a straight set victory. Really surprised by Istomin's win over Almagro. It was an inspired performance and well deserved. Azarenka and Errani were both imperious as they crushed their opponents, not even losing a single game between them. Good wins for Wozniacki and Ivanovic whilst Kvitova had a scare in the second set of her match. An amazing performance from the American Duval to defeat Stosur in three very competitive sets. Another good day of tennis in the US but really disappointed to see Heather Watson crash out. It was looking good after Watson won the opening set but she lost her way in the match and consequently lost.
